Museum welcomes Rishi for a lesson on Cook

Wed, 28th Jan 2015

Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum opened its doors last Wednesday to Rishi Sunak, prospective parliamentary candidate for Richmond.

The museum that saw 8000 visitors from all over the globe in 2014, a record number, wanted to show Mr Sunak, what it has to offer. He was given a guided tour of the museum by Irene Saunders, a dedicated and enthusiastic volunteer for over 30 years and Liz Scovell, a volunteer and Trustee. He said: “The museum is a credit to the village and our area to showcase the education of such an important figure in history, as well as showing the history of the village."

The 34-year-old, who hopes to succeed William Hague as constituency MP following the General Election in May, described The Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum, nestled in the centre of picturesque Great Ayton, as "a valuable resource for people of all ages".

He added: “It is a tribute to the local community that the museum can be run entirely by volunteers."
